Employment / Career

We are happier if our employment suits our interests and abilities and meets our needs.

The unemployed or under-employed are fearful and discouraged, seeking an answer to “How can I find a good job?” People without a job or with a job they consider below their abilities are vulnerable to discouragement and its erosive effects on every part of life. Consequently many persons hide the fact that they have job challenges in order to avoid embarrassment. They feel humiliated and often avoid seeking help.

Employment - Businessman
When we have honorable employment, we are able to provide for ourselves, our families, and others. Suitable employment also gives us opportunities to improve our talents and develop the attributes within us.

We all have employment related questions.....
  • Should I keep my current job or look at finding a new one?
  • Can I find a job that better fits my skills, interests, and family needs (including schedule)?
  • Why can’t my son or daughter seem to find appropriate work?
  • Are there jobs available for my disabled friend or relative?
  • If I need to enter the workforce, am I adequately prepared?
  • What am I qualified to do?
THINGS TO CONSIDER

resumés----Do you have an updated resumé?

interviews--do you know how to have a successful interview?

updating education---college courses--- Do you need more college courses to be able to get a better job?

career opportunities---Do you constantly watch for career opportunities?

WHEN SHOULD YOU START PREPARING FOR YOUR NEXT JOB?

For most of us, the answer is NOW. Every two or three years, all of us should take a hard look at our employment situation.
  1. Start by updating your resumé.
  2. If you don’t have one, make one.
  3. Look it over and provide an honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses.
  4. Look at the company where you work and the industry in which you are employed.
  5. Is our company changing?
  6. Is your industry updating, growing, down-sizing, moving to other states or countries?
  7. Even if you love your job and your supervisor thinks you are just wonderful, are there risks to your being employed 5 or 10 years from now?
  8. If our company were to close or move out of state, could you realistically find another job at similar wages and benefits?
  9. If not, what kind of preparation do you need to help you avoid a future employment crisis?
  10. The answer may be training - either “deep” training to enhance current job skills or “broad” training to provide opportunities in other jobs or industries.
