Shelters

Whatever the situation, you will need shelter

Shelter can be created from may different types of items. Below you will find a list of items that can be used as shelter. Consider putting some of these items in your 72 hour kit in case you need to have shelter.

Tent as shelter
Items that are used for shelter include:

House or Apartment If the situation is one where you can stay in your own home - great - a major problem is solved.
Tent - backpackers / family When you have to decide on the kind of tent you like, make sure you practice putting it together so that when the time comes to use it - you are a "pro".
Lean To This can be made out of a blanket and tree branches. It is a good idea to learn how to lash so that it is easy to assemble a lean to. If you have packed a shower curtain, you could use this in place of a blanket.
Rain Poncho This will keep the individual protected from weather
Garbage Bags There are many uses for garbage bags - making them into ponchos is just one idea for them
Space Blankets or Bags These can be purchased in the camping section at stores. They are light weight and warm.
An Umbrella This will not keep you warm, but you will stay somewhat dry from snow and rain AND shaded from the hot sun
Sleeping Bags Even though they are usually not waterproof, they will protect you and keep you warm if necessary but it would be a good idea to have another shelter plan in mind
Bed Rolls This is made by taking several blankets to make an item used like a sleeping bag. This is also not waterproof, but warm.
Car Remember that your car can be a shelter if you cannot be in your home and it is a temporary situation where a tent would not be necessary.
Tornado Shelter Don't forget to decide where you and your family should go if there is a tornado in your area. basement? crawl space? bathtub? where should you plan to go? (read about tornados in the emergency section)
Earthquake Shelter There are many precautions one can take if you live in earthquake territory. One thing to remember is to close your bedroom drapes every night to protect you from broken, flying glass. Do NOT arrange a bedroom so that the bed is near a window if you live in an area that has earthquakes!! (read about earthquakes in the emergency section)
